Registered recipients of German compensation can have their ‘Life Certificates’ endorsed officially at the Jewish Holocaust Centre on Thursday 26 July 2018, between 1:00pm and 3.00pm.

It is essential for those who would like their certificates signed and stamped to complete the required information on the forms they have received prior to their appointments, and to bring proof of identity with them - valid photo-ID such as a passport, driver’s license, Keypass or proof-of-age card.

Guest Speaker Professor Atina Grossmann will be giving a lecture on Remapping Survival: Jewish Refugees and Lost Memories of Displacement, Trauma, and Rescue on the Margins of the Holocaust.

Atina Grossmann is Professor of History in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the Cooper Union in New York City. Atina has published many scholarly books including, Jews, Germans, and Allies: Close Encounters in Occupied Germany (2007, and translated into German, 2012).

Book Launch: L'Chaim the exceptional life of Chaim Sztajer by his daughter, Malka Zylbersztajn. To be launched by Professor Andrew Markus, Pratt Foundation Research Chair of Jewish Civilisation, Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia.

Chaim’s story begins pre-war Czestochowa, Poland where poverty and antisemitism are an everyday struggle surpassed only by the strength and love of Chaim’s tightknit religious family.

Guest Speaker Professor Paul Bartrop will be giving a public lecture on “Failing to Understand Failure:Reassessing the Evian Conference of 1938”

July 2018 marks the 80th anniversary of the Evian Conference on refugees from Nazism, which has long been identified as a ‘failed conference’ and a ‘lost opportunity’ to save the Jews of Europe. In The Evian Conference of 1938 and the Jewish Refugee Crisis (London, Palgrave MacMillan, 2017), Dr Bartrop offers a critical assessment of this view.

The JHC Social Club guest speaker Leah Kaminksy, physician and award-winning writer, will be giving a lecture on ‘Bearing Witness through Fiction’.

Her debut novel The Waiting Room won the prestigious Voss Literary Prize and was shortlisted for the Helen Asher Award (Vintage Australia 2015, Harper Perennial US 2016).
